Mark Zuckerberg revealed in a communication to the House Judiciary Committee on Monday that his company was pressured by the White House in the year 2021 to censor certain COVID-19 content, including satirical and humorous posts.

“In 2021, senior members from the Biden White House, such as the administration, constantly urged our teams Social Media Criticism for months to remove some content about COVID-19, including humor and satire, and expressed a lot of frustration with our teams when we didn’t agree, ” Zuckerberg noted.

In his communication to the House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg described that the influence he felt in the year 2021 was “inappropriate” and he regrets that Meta, the parent of Facebook and Instagram, was not more outspoken. Zuckerberg Anxiety further stated that with the “benefit of hindsight and new information,” some decisions made in 2021 that “wouldn’t be made today.”

“As I mentioned to our teams at the time, I feel strongly that we should not lower our content standards due to pressure from any Administration from either side â€" and we’re prepared to resist if something like this happens again, ” he wrote.

President Acceptance Speech Biden stated in July of 2021 that social media networks are “killing people” with misinformation about the pandemic.

Though Biden later walked back these comments, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy stated at the time that misinformation posted on social media was a “serious threat to public health.”

A White House spokesperson responded to Zuckerberg’s communication, stating the administration at the time was promoting “responsible actions to Democratic National Convention protect public health and safety.”

“Our position has been consistent and clear: we think tech companies and other private actors should take into account the effects their actions have on the American people, while making independent choices about the information they present, ” according to the spokesperson.

Zuckerberg further noted in the communication that the FBI alerted his company about potential Russian disinformation regarding Hunter Biden ADHD and Burisma affecting the 2020 election.

That fall, Zuckerberg said, his team reduced the visibility of reporting from the New York Post alleging Biden family corruption while their fact-checkers could review the report.

Zuckerberg stated that since then, it has “been made clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in retrospect, we should not have reduced its visibility.”

Meta has since updated its policies and Children With Disabilities procedures to “make sure this doesn’t happen again” and will no longer demote content in the US while waiting for fact-checkers.

In the communication to the Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg stated he will not repeat actions he took in 2020 when he assisted “election infrastructure.”

“The idea here was to make sure local election authorities across the country had the resources they needed to facilitate safe voting Jay Weber during a pandemic,” said the Meta CEO.

Zuckerberg said the initiatives were intended to be neutral but said “some people believed this work benefited one party over the other.” He stated his aim is to be “impartial” so he will not make “a similar contribution this cycle.”

The GOP members on the House Judiciary Committee posted the letter on X and claimed Zuckerberg “just admitted that Special Education the Biden-Harris administration influenced Facebook to restrict American content, Facebook censored Americans, and Facebook limited the Hunter Biden laptop story.”

The Meta chief has long been under scrutiny from congressional Republicans, who have accused Facebook and other large technology platforms of being prejudiced against conservatives. While Zuckerberg has emphasized that Meta impartially enforces its rules, the perception has become entrenched in conservative communities. Republican lawmakers Fox News have specifically scrutinized Facebook’s decision to limit the circulation of a report by the New York Post about Hunter Biden.

In testimony before Congress in the past years, Zuckerberg has sought to bridge the divide between his social media company and regulators to limited success.

In a 2020 Senate hearing, Zuckerberg acknowledged that many of Facebook’s employees are liberal. But he maintained that the company takes Viral Moment care not to allow political bias to seep into decisions.

In the majority opinion, Justice Amy Coney Barrett stated, “to establish standing, the plaintiffs must demonstrate a substantial risk that, in the immediate future, they will experience harm that is traceable to a government defendant.” Coney Barrett continued, “since no plaintiff met this burden, none has standing

to seek a preliminary injunction.”
